denotations and connotations

 Denotations-

I can see a boy who seems upset or hurt. Behind him there seems to be a hut. The writing says Dig toilets not Graves. The water aid logo suggests that he may be unhealthy.

Connotations-

The writing may suggest that this boy and his community may not have toilets to be able to flush or even have the facility of a toilet. The impact of 'not graves' conveys that people are dying because of the lack of water/facilities this boy receives. The use of the white colour of the text may be showing sympathy or peace towards this boy.

Analysis-

The water aid advert may show the childs vulnerability. We see this from his facial expressions which seem like hes upset or hurt. The hut which can be seen behind him may convey that hes very poor and doesnt have facilities that other countries may. The impact of 'not graves' conveys that people are dying because of the lack of water/facilities this boy receives. The use of the white colour of the text may be showing sympathy or peace towards this boy.

NIKE: MAKE EVERY YARD COUNT

Analysis- In the advert we can see cricket being played in the beach and on grass, perhaps this is showing that it is a sport that can be played anywhere. The connotations of the word Yard is garden, therefore the advert may be trying to say that cricket is for everyone. The 3 different pannels suggest that regardless of the conditions you should play cricket. The colour white may have connotations of a new beginning which emphasises that you should start now.
