Women are represented as housewives and they are made to look good to show women always have to look perfect.

9) What is the preferred reading for this advert - what did the producers of the advert want the audience to think in 1955?

The preferred reading would probably be that women enjoy cleaning, clearly this is shown by the women's happy facial expressions. The joy that the women is expressing may convey that all women should be determined and eager to use this new washing powder. The slogan is repeated which may suggest how effective it is. The producers may also be wanting to let everybody know that it is the best thing around. This is shown by the zigzag border at the top.

10) What is the oppositional reading for this advert - how might a modern audience respond to this text and the representation of women here?

Audiences may be offended by this sexist advert. The central image is a women doing the cleaning which is quite sexist and audiences may feel that only women clean. The Anchorage text begins with This will shake you mother which further implies that women should be house wives. The women is also portrayed as very well dressed which may suggest that women always have to look good regardless if their cleaning.
