Summer project tasks
Complete the following tasks on a blogpost on your Media blog called 'Summer Project: coursework planning':
1) Research: Music videos
Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:
Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied
How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?
The opening scene informs the audience of the dangers of the police and how they are capturing and silencing the civilians. However once the boy gets captured, the audience are forced to carry on watching to see what would happen next. The police are seen as the villains using Props character theory. The This music video, tells a story which helps audiences to watch it. Whilst watching the scenes, audiences may find the song catchy and this will help the artists behind the music video get more fame.
Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew
How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.
The camerawork is mainly a mid shot, presenting the singers face and shoulders, this makes it seem like hes singing to us as if its person to person. The lighting is quite bright which conveys the positivity through the song. The room has many props which helps it seem like there is a party going on. The band are wearing casual party clothes which reemphasises the positivity in the song.
Music video 3: Foals - Hummer
How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?
The music video starts of with quite fast cuts with each instrument being shown as its played. This fast editing matches the fast tempo of the song and music. This creates a quite energetic environment and feeling for the audience when listening or watching it. Towards the middle and end of the music video the amount of cuts reduces and it helps the audience to settle down a bit and enjoy the music.
The music video has action and enigma codes especially when Ariana is told not to leave the car though she rebels and does it. The audience want to know why she wasn't allowed to leave and why she didn't listen, where is she going. All these questions force the audience to carry on watching to get there answers fulfilled.
2) Music video planning
Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:
Artist and song you have chosen: Shape of you Ed Sheeran
Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.): It will start of with a man and woman in a restaurant talking.
Link to brief (one small step to improving your community): It will have woman stop being sexualised.
Actors/performers you plan to use: Friends
Locations: Restaurant, Bedroom
Costume/make-up/props required: Costume will be a suit and a dress.
3) Statement of Intent
For my two-minute music video project, I have chosen the song Shape of You by Ed Sheeran. The reason I picked this song is because it’s really popular, catchy, and fits well with the idea I want to show in my video. My plan is to create a narrative-style music video that starts with a man and woman meeting in a restaurant. Instead of following the usual stereotypes of how women are often shown in music videos, I want to make mine different by presenting the woman as equal, not sexualised. This links to the exam brief about making a small step to improving the community, because I think showing women in a more respectful way can help challenge the way people sometimes see them in media.
In my video, the main characters will be played by friends. They will be wearing normal but smart costumes, like a suit for the male character and a dress for the female character, to show that it is a date setting. The locations will mainly be a restaurant and a bedroom, but the way I film them will be focused more on conversation, connection, and their personalities rather than just looks.
The target audience for my music video is teenagers and young adults who enjoy Ed Sheeran’s music. I want them to relate to the story of people meeting and connecting, but also notice the more respectful approach I’m trying to show. By doing this, I am following conventions of the pop genre (with romance and performance), but I’m also subverting some conventions by not making the woman’s role about being objectified. Overall, I want my music video to be engaging, relatable, and positive for the audience.
